Readers Cup Competiton
In May, St Bernard State School sent a team of five Year 6 students to participate in The Readers Cup. The Readers Cup is organised by the Qld Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia. It is a state wide competition for young readers. Teams of four students, along with a reserve, read a set of books, and then compete with other schools to answer quiz questions from the books. This competition challenges students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team, and continue to develop their love of reading. It allows readers to compete at a regional and state level similar to sporting competitions and to meet other students with an equal passion for books.

Each week, the team with Mrs Antill, STLaN, to discuss their answers to questions that they designed themselves to storybooks that were selected for our Region.
The competition was held on Thursday, 30th May at Hillcrest Christian College. The team competed alongside 29 schools from the Gold Coast. We are very proud of our team who came fourth place. “I couldn’t have got them this far if it wasn’t for all the great work the teachers in the classrooms have been doing around reading at our school!” said Mrs Antill.
The students really enjoyed the whole experience. Here are some of their comments.
“I thought participating in the Readers Cup challenge was a great experience and I suggest that the school continue this in the future,” said a team member.
“Competing in the challenge was a great teamwork experience! They gave us a perfect amount of time to read and study the books. It was really exciting how we came 4th” said another team memeber. .
“The whole experience was great! I enjoyed reading all the books and I enjoyed Tuesdays!” said Braydon.
“I would like to thank Mrs Antill for doing everything for us. I loved spending the sessions with her,” said Molly. “ and for the first time I think 4th is a great achievement.”
We are now planning to include the Readers Cup Challenge every year and are already thinking about our team for next year!
